Besides knowing the speed and direction a ship is traveling on a vast ocean, the captain and his crew both need to know the purpose of the ship’s voyage. The boat’s mission may be to deliver precious cargo at a port or, on the other hand, break the record for a trans-Atlantic crossing.
The purpose changes the nature of the voyage.
Similar to planning a boat’s journey across the seas to a specific port, organizations need a Leadership Strategy which consists of a well-defined purpose and clear direction to give guidance to its actions.
The ship’s code of conduct reflects its shared values which determine how the crew work and live together. Their motivation and effectiveness is directly correlated to the strength of its Leadership Culture.
